Google Business Profile Checklist for Winnipeg Businesses
By Jagassar ·
When someone in Winnipeg searches for what you do, the map results usually come before any website, and those results come from Google Business Profiles. A complete, accurate profile is one of the most effective free things a local business can do for search.
Storefront or service area?
If customers come to you at an address with your signage, and someone is there during your hours, show the address. If you go to your customers (trades, cleaners, mobile services) and don't serve people at your location, hide the address and list the areas you serve instead.
Google expects a service area to stay within roughly two hours' drive of where you're based. "Canada" won't work; Winnipeg and the towns around it will.
Get the basics exactly right
- Name: your real business name, as it appears on your signage and documents. Adding keywords or locations to it breaks Google's guidelines.
- Primary category: the one that best describes your main service. Add secondary categories only where they're true.
- Phone, website and hours that match your website exactly.
Keep your details consistent everywhere
Search engines cross-check your business name, address and phone number (often called NAP) across your website, social profiles and directories such as Yelp, YellowPages and your local chamber of commerce. Use one format everywhere, down to the unit number and postal code.
Fill in what customers look for
- Services or products, with short descriptions.
- Photos of your work, your team and your location, taken by you.
- A booking or quote link if you take appointments or requests online.
- Posts for news, offers and events.
Reviews
Ask every happy customer for a review using the short review link from your profile, and reply to every review, good or bad. Don't offer discounts or gifts for reviews, and don't write your own: both break Google's policies and can get reviews removed.
Mistakes that get profiles suspended
- Keywords or city names stuffed into the business name.
- A service area much larger than you can realistically serve.
- A virtual office, an unstaffed coworking desk or a PO box used as a storefront address.
- More than one profile for the same business.
- A category that doesn't match what you actually do.
If your profile is suspended, fix the details first, then request reinstatement from the profile with evidence such as a photo of your signage or your business registration.
Make your website back it up
Your profile and your website support each other. Put the same name, address and phone number on your site, label them in the page so search engines can read them reliably, and make sure the pages you link from your profile load fast and answer what people searched for.
